“Circa 2018 my best friend and I went to see them play at Cola Roxy in ATL. Never have seen a big artist before, and MGMT was my first. After the show we waited for the guys to come out for the meet and greet, and I was suuuuper nervous. Andrew was the first to come out, and stated to everyone that he had a dinner to go to so he didn’t want to take pics with anyone to save time, but he did signatures. He got to me, and before I asked him to sign my metanoia vinyl, I said “hey, I just want to let you know that y’alls music has been so important to me” (something along the lines of that, but much more awkward) and Andrew said something in return equally as awkward and it made me feel better knowing one of my favorite artists was as awkward as me lol He ended up taking pictures with folks in the crowd anyway, and although I wanted one, I was gonna keep walking away satisfied with my little exchange of words and signature. But my friend, and this other girl who claimed to “know them really well” called me back over. They were already next to Andrew who was ready for a photo saying “come back and take a photo! Come onnnn (my name)!” And I said “nooo it’s okay, I promise” and then Andrew said “comeonn (my name)” with the biggest smile and I couldn’t say no to that. Sorry if this story is all over the place, I’m pretty tired right now, but I just wanted to share it along with your story because that single moment meant the world to me. He is such a kind soul, and I know he probably doesn’t remember me, but I’ll never forget it. (:

“Story time. Anybody close to me knows I’m an MGMT fan boy but more specifically, an Andrew Vanwyngarden fan boy. In 2018, MGMT was set to perform at the Just Like Heaven music fest in Long Beach. My cousin Lucas (another big MGMT fan) and I wanted to see them live so bad but we just didn’t have the funds to go at the time. So we thought, screw it, we can always listen from outside the fest right? So we threw our bikes onto my dads truck, parked in downtown LB and rode our bikes to the queen Mary. We stood on some barricades just outside the fence of the festival and we were able to see them perform up until security told us to get down. We got back on our bikes, rode to a different area and listened to the rest of the performance. We were positioned behind the stage area when we noticed that artists were coming out from this exit not too far away from us. We waited around a bit hoping maybe MGMT would also come out of this exit and sure enough, they did. We managed to get Andrew’s attention and we were able to get this photo with him [first image]. Fast forward to yesterday, MGMT headlined the same festival once again but this time, Lucas and I had backstage/VIP access and were able to meet and chat with Andrew before he was set to go on stage. He was so humble and kind to us. I got to ask him for songwriting advice, Lucas asked him about his favorite surf spot, and he told us about his new album being completed. He also mentioned how excited he was for us to see what he had in store for his set as it was something different than they’ve ever done before. We also told him about our encounter in 2018 and asked if we could retake that same photo [second image].” Photos and story by futurepastlife (https://instagram.com/futurepastlife?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==)
